Transportation · 2024Revamping AAA's mobile app to modernize UX, enhance performance, and scale digital services for 60 million members.

The American Automobile Association (AAA), founded in 1902, is a major federation of motor clubs in North America, serving over 60 million members with roadside assistance, travel planning, insurance, and automotive support.
As part of its digital evolution, AAA identified the need to modernize its mobile application — realigning it with current user expectations, improving performance, and building a scalable foundation for future growth.
AAA's mobile app had become outdated in both design and technology. The interface lacked intuitiveness, performance was below modern standards, and the system was increasingly difficult to maintain — directly impacting member trust and service reliability.
The interface was misaligned with contemporary usability standards, creating friction across core user flows.
The solution had to deliver a native-like experience using Ionic while maintaining consistency across iOS and web platforms.
Performance issues directly impacted perceived reliability. A purely visual redesign wouldn't be sufficient — structural improvements were required.
As Lead Designer, the work followed a structured, end-to-end process: stakeholder interviews to align on business goals, heuristic evaluations to surface usability issues, and visual explorations to define the new design direction.
High-fidelity mockups were delivered for both iOS and web platforms, with detailed Confluence documentation and close engineering collaboration to ensure accurate implementation.
The solution was a comprehensive redesign using the Ionic framework — achieving a native-like experience while leveraging cross-platform capabilities. Critical user flows were streamlined for the services members rely on most: roadside assistance, travel tools, and account management.
Responsiveness and performance were treated as design decisions, not engineering afterthoughts. A modern visual language was introduced to realign the app with current design standards, while expanded functionality was built on a scalable foundation ready for future growth.

The redesigned application delivered a significantly improved user experience — combining modern aesthetics with enhanced usability and performance. The app successfully transitioned from an outdated platform to a scalable, future-ready product capable of supporting AAA's evolving service ecosystem.
"A holistic redesign — balancing UX, technology, and business needs — can revitalize a legacy product and set the stage for long-term growth."Project conclusion — Alejandro Cadavid
